The Sforza Chapel is the mausoleum of Cardinals Guido Ascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora and Alessandro Sforza. In 1562, the two brothers succeeded in involving 87- year old Michelangelo in the project. Buonarroti designed a rectangular oblique plan, filled with movement with lateral elliptical apses and a squared off space intended for the altar.
When Michelangelo died, the work continued under the guidance of Tiberio Calcagni and Giacomo della Porta, who designed the lateral gabled tombs, flanked by herma of caryatids and crowned by angels with trumpets.
