The Chapel of Saint Michael Archangel was an ancient gothic chapel dedicated to Saints Michael Archangel and San Pietro in Vincoli (Saint Peter in Chains), until Ferdinando Fuga's restauration work on the occasion of the Holy Year of 1750. The chapel's creation was facilitated by Cardinal Archpriest d’Estouteville, who entrusted Piero della Francesca with the decorative paintings. Despite the bad state of conservation, the frescoes on the ceiling depicting the four Evangelists, are of important historical and artistic value because they are the only wall paintings by Piero that are still housed in Rome
