Pope Francis' tomb will be placed in the lateral nave of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, between the Pauline Chapel — which houses the icon of the Salus Populi Romani — and the Sforza Chapel, near the side altar dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi.
The floor of the tomb will be made of stone from Finale Ligure, as a tribute to the lands of origin of the Pope's family. The tombstone, sober and discreet, will consist of a simple slab of Ligurian stone, bearing the inscription FRANCISCUS, engraved and raised 12 centimeters above the floor level.
On the front wall of the burial niche, an enlarged reproduction of the pectoral cross that Pope Francis commonly wore will be placed.
The walls of the burial niche will be plastered and painted in an ivory tone, harmonious with the color of the tombstone and the floor, maintaining a simple and solemn style.
On the front of the tomb, according to the Pope’s will, the pre-existing inscription dating back to 1615 — from the time of Pope Paul V Borghese, associated with the construction of the Chapel of the Salus Populi Romani — will be preserved. This inscription commemorates the Pope’s efforts in erecting the chapel to glorify the image of the Virgin, attributed to Saint Luke, and recommends the perpetual celebration of rites and hymns in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
